Never held a kite? This guide explains how lessons work at Element5, how many hours you need before riding on your own, and why it isn't scary - even if you're not a strong swimmer.
Kitesurfing is riding a board on water pulled by a controllable kite (an inflatable airfoil). The kite gives power, the board gives glide, and the rider steers both through lines and a harness. The Gulf of Finland offers stable wind through the season, and its shallow bottom makes it an ideal place for first steps.
It's about kite control, not muscle. That's why teens, women, and people 50+ all learn here.
Modern kites have a quick-release - in a second the kite flags out and loses power. The instructor is always within range, on the radio or nearby on a boat.
A base course of 8-12 hours is usually enough for the first water start and a few dozen metres of board riding.
Kitesurfing isn't only for athletes. You need motivation and basic coordination.
From age 10 (weight enough to handle small trainer kites) with no upper limit. We've taught riders 60+.
Floating in a wetsuit and impact vest is enough. Pro swimming skills aren't required.
Standard activity level: if you can walk a couple of kilometres and do a pull-up, you'll cope. No bicep training needed.
Lessons start in chest-deep water. That removes most of the anxiety on day one.
Meet the kite on land. If you like it - continue. If not - you've only lost an hour.
Meteorology, safety, reading wind, releases, safety leash. The base that makes everything later faster.
A small 2-3 m² stunt kite. You learn to feel the lines and power zone without risk of being lifted.
Full-size kite, body-drag (swimming under kite pull), practising releases and relaunch.
Board on feet, water start from a seated position, the first 10-50 metres of gliding over a flat bay.
The school provides kite gear (kite, board, harness, wetsuit, helmet, vest) for the lesson. From you - the everyday stuff:
On average 8-12 hours on water. That's 3-5 sessions of 2-3 hours. Progress depends on wind, weight, and prior board-sport experience (windsurfing, snowboard, skate all help).
The lesson is rescheduled at no cost. We have flexible booking and our own wind forecast for Gulf of Finland spots.
Technically from 10, when weight allows handling a trainer kite. Independent riding on water - usually from 12-13. There's no upper limit.
Summer is warmer and water gives a safety margin - most beginners find it more comfortable. Snowkiting on the bay ice is a separate discipline; you can start there if you already snowboard or ski.
Yes. The first hours are in chest-deep water. We move into deeper water only once you can confidently steer the kite and body-drag.
No. We provide fresh Core Kites gear from the school stock for all lessons and courses. Buying makes sense once you ride on your own and know your preferred style.
A certificate for any discipline and any number of hours. Valid for one year from activation, transferable to another person, works in winter and summer. Time and spot - chosen based on the weather.

An Element5 kite school training certificate is a safe and quick path to learning kitesurfing. Lessons include personal instructor time and rental of all required equipment. The total training time is shown on the certificate. We teach both winter and summer.
If you already know how to ride and need extra coaching or to fix mistakes - the certificate is great for further progress. The program is discussed in advance and tailored to you.
The certificate from activation, can be transferred to other people and used in winter. Time and place of lessons depend on current weather (in summer - wind at 5–9 m/s).
